Abstract

The use of stem cell therapy to treat previously deemed incurable diseases has become more prevalent as technology continues to advance. It provides a level of treatment that focuses on regenerating damaged structures to support the longevity of a patient’s health, rather than just treating symptoms, as other common treatments do. In the dental field, a new treatment for periodontitis has been the emphasis of stem cell research, as the prevalence of the disease is only increasing, while current prognosis offers only palliative treatments. Both mesenchymal stem cells and dental tissue–derived stem cells are currently being investigated for their ability to regenerate dental structures damaged because of periodontitis. This review aims to examine the regenerative potential of various stem cell types that can be used in tissue engineering to develop a more suitable treatment for periodontitis.
