Exploring the Intriguing World of “Dopamine” in Health and Disease: An Integrated Scientific Review

Abstract

Dopamine is a vital chemical that can act as a neurotransmitter in the nervous system and as a neurohormone peripherally, with distinctive physiological effects that may influence optimal bodily functions.[1] Deficits or sub-optimal levels of dopamine pose a major physiological challenge, while its overproduction and hyperactivity may present with compromised specific neurologic or psychiatric manifestations. Dopamine is not only found in humans; there is documented evidence of its role in ameliorating adverse environmental conditions in plants.[2] There are integrated and interconnected neural pathways in the Brain that process and release dopamine, exerting significant effects across motivation, pleasure, reward, motor functions, and neuroendocrine control. Critically understanding these pathways, interactions, and neural elements of the associated brain regions provides an ideal framework for dissecting normal functioning and potential malfunction. It is important to emphasize that the clinical ramifications of dopaminergic pathways and their responses span neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, pathology, pharmacology, psychiatry, and clinical psychology. The objective of this review is to provide a concise integration of dopaminergic activities and relevant clinical entities for professionals with scientific and clinical orientations.
